It is a well known fact that when asked what my “type” is, I am quick to respond “Pale and frail!”
Obviously there are exceptions to any rule, but, it goes back to the early 90′s.. I was sitting there in Iowa, 12 miles south of Pleasantville watching 120 Minutes on a sunday night, when what should I see but the porcelain perfection of Toni Halliday cross the television screen.

Sitting there in my acid wash jeans, I can only imagine as the Mt. Dew dribbled from my chin. They sure didn’t make them like that in Iowa. I would later battle with an interior struggle as to whether or not I would buy Curves CD or The Cure’s wish… My uncle suggested I purchase The Cure beings I was much more that type of guy… I bought both.
And this is how I discovered the lovely ladies of the shoegaze world. Soon to follow with the frail stylings of Miki and Emma:
But something had always been missing, and it wouldn’t be until 1998 that I found the perfect combination of parts Pale & Frail, Breathy Vocals, and Short Hair, in one glorious Rachel Slowdive
I never noticed how much like Dexter Morgan Neil looked before.
Years later I would see Mojave 3 playing at Schuba’s in Chicago, after the set Rachel exited the stage and brushed my elbow. I vowed then and there that I would never wash that elbow again, and I haven’t.
