My Flowery Youth Pt. 2

February 28th, 2009 --> · 3 Comments

And now, another installment from the awarding winning series “My Flowery Youth”.

When I first went to college I spent a lot of my time on IRC.  Now for you youngsters who weren’t on the internet back in ’95, let me tell you about IRC.  IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat, I imagine it is most comparable to AOL Chat rooms, but I can’t say for sure because I’m no n00b and have never been in an AOL chat room.

You would get on a server and /join #whatever .  Now when I was first sat in front of the IRC I didn’t know what channel (thats what the “rooms” are called) to join as you could create one just by joining it. like /join #evan to discuss all things evan.. though obviously no one else would be there  and that would defeat the purpose of wasting nights away on the computer.  So the first time I was put on IRC I said “What do I do now?” and it was suggested I /join #blur as the person showing me was a big Blur fan.  So I joined it and never left, well, not until many years later.

Here is an actual photo of yours truly on #blur

Now, back in those days, people were what they claimed to be on the internet, when a gal said she was 19 living in canada, she was a 19 year old living in canada, not like these days where it is some guy in his parents basement.  Anyway, the stories I could tell you about those days, but that’s not the purpose of this blog post, the purpose is to tell another amazing tale of my flowery youth.

One of the popular ladies of #blur was a user named dinkee and we had a brief online romance.. which really consisted of very little considering I lived in Iowa City and she lived in Hong Kong, so there were phone calls, but that was about it.  As time passed, so did more internet romances, but in #blur I stayed.  Well, one day dinkee was in toronto where a bunch of other #blur people lived, I think her mother was in town for a chin tuck.  dinkee wanted to me come up and join them, but I was 19, and telemarketing, so naturally I had no money, well.. that was no problem, she would wire me money so I could come up, if I would come up.  So hell yes I’m gonna take a free trip to Toronto and meet up with my adoring fans.

Well, I got there and dinkee had a hotel room and I met people and proceeded to get wasted on Maximum Ice beer.  I have pictures of this night, which I know have been scanned and are on the  internet somewhere.. Oh well, I’m sure they will show up on here some day.  Anyway, drunk on Maximum Ice I was finally introduced to joysweets, Andrea (I know she’s on facebook but I can’t remember how to spell her last name).  Oh I should also mention my IRC /nick was cooljerk, or fatbob or jarvocock and on april fools day fooljerk.

Anyway, without further hesitation, let’s see what I wrote about my first kiss with her years later..

Drunk and stupid in Toronto.. My memory is still foggy as to how things happened exactly. I drank far too much and we stumbled into the rain soaked streets, into a subway and back into the club, arms tangled like a rose bush.  You grabbed me outside and kissed me, I sucked a ring off your finger, and that’s the last I remember until walking you to the trains the next morning. A few hours later I was heading back home.  Every time we saw each other after that point, the passion was lacking.

Not too terribly flowery actually, though ending on a dramatic note.  But as you can tell, we did see each other a few times more.  I went back up to Toronto and she came to me too.  I know there is an amusing anecdote about how it ended, but that isn’t what this blog post is about.  Not long after her I would have another internet romance with starshy, but that is another blog post from my flowery youth.
